syf presents yesterday was quite good. i dont regret spending the 10 bucks to watch the performance (:
chinese drama was the first. i couldnt understand what they were saying most of the time. they should do it like they did in kc - put english subtitles in the slides in the background. haha. and the guzheng was not bad. after hearing them, i wanna play too. i have a guzheng at home but i cant play it.
the dance was very artistic, and i enjoyed it a lot. you dont usually get to see this kind of artistic dances. when choir came onstage after the intermission, i was surprised to see so many boys. haha. i listened to a recording of cj choir before, cos my cousin was in rj choir last year and their conductor is the same guy, and i found that recording in his com. comparing with last night's performance, i think our choir has improved loads. after that was guitar. when they sat down and opened their black footstools, at first i thought it was a tuner, and they were going to tune their guitars onstage. haha. but i think the second piece they played, shouldnt be played on a guitar. its a quite famous piece with a catchy motif, i forgot the name, but that piece sounds a lot better with an orchestra. cos it has many crescendos and other expression markings, which a guitar cannot fully bring out. i just think they're not doing justice to the piece. i always think playing trills on the guitar is so cool. i always loved doing that, esp on the electric cos its much easier, because there is the amplifier.
i think band's syf piece was really well done. i think the piece is called overture no.5. but i wonder how come the strings section was almost non-existent, with only 2 double bassoons. and i didnt even notice the piano was being played until sarah pointed it out to me, cos it was overpowered by the brass instruments. but then, it was the brass instruments that make the whole piece sound more powerful. overall it was really really good. we were impressed when they even sang a little in their second piece. i heard that only cj and aj got gold with honours, and i was kinda surprised hci didnt get it. i think if our school had a military band, it would have been so exciting to watch. like every year for national day parade, one of a sec sch military band would perform at the start. so cool to watch, esp when the drummer tosses the stick in the air high up and catches it. and our school should have strings and handbells as ccas too. i have never watched a handbell performance before, and i would like to watch it (:
like what josh chew pointed out while emceeing, the band has to play the same bar over and over again. likewise, the choir has to sing the same few lines over again, same for the other performing arts ccas. i think its quite cool to see people who, in just like 1 1/2 years of constant practice, become so capable in what they do. last night's syf performance was a great opportunity for them to showcase the fruits of their hardwork, and for us to appreciate it.
yesterday was an exciting day right from morning when my bus broke down, till at night when i accidentally locked my brother out of the house and he was damn annoyed at me. many other things happened in between too (:
